I’m Diego. My journey in art began as a child, surrounded by canvases, colors, and music. My grandmother, Angélica Moctezuma was a singer-songwriter, homemaker, and magnificent chef. She even performed at Frida Kahlo’s house. Her ancestry traces back to the last Aztec emperor, Moctezuma II, and today about 200 descendants remain, some in Spain and Mexico; the title associated with the lineage was abolished in Mexico in 1934 but still recognized in Spain.
My grandfather, José Muñoz was a painter and a graduate of Mexico City’s first art school, La Esmeralda, later becoming its director. After retiring, he collected and traded art, teaching me to appreciate it from all perspectives. He also had a collection of vinyl records and an old phonograph, which I often played, exploring musical genres from all over the world. Together, we visited many museums and galleries across Europe, which deeply enriched my artistic perspective.
My mother, used to dance flamenco and speak to me in Italian especially when I was up to some mischief and she was mad at me. She also taught me to love animals. My father played the guitar and introduced me to both books and music. Though they have both passed, their presence continues inspiring me.
I earned a bachelor’s degree in business and helped my grandfather with art dealings. Since then, I have had access to his extensive library, and more than 20 years of observing and dealing art has taught me to recognize authenticity and value-not only in art but in life itself.
